CarsDirect and GMC provide information regarding gross vehicle weight. It is often referred to as GVWR in a vehicle's owner’s manual to provide towing or capacity capabilities.
Gross vehicle weight is often confused with what is referred to as curb weight. When the car is only loaded with standard equipment and amenities, the weight of the car is the curb weight. The gross vehicle weight suggests the highest capacity of cargo the vehicle can hold.
Adding cargo in excess of the suggested gross vehicle weight results in a number of potential vehicle problems and accidents. This includes broken springs, brake failure or blowouts from overheated tires.
