Perform a vehicle registration search by applying for a vehicle history report from any vendor approved by the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System. To access approved VHR vendors, visit the NMVTIS website, VehicleHistory.gov. VHR vendors charge a small fee for a detailed VHR containing vehicle registration information.
To acquire vehicle registration/titling information, order a VHR on any of the NMVTIS approved VHR vendor sites. There are only five NMVTIS-approved VHR vendors, as of 2015: Titlecheck.us, InstaVIN.com, RigDig.com, VINSmart.com and CheckThatVIN.com. To complete the order, provide a valid VIN code, read and accept the set terms and conditions, and then provide the necessary billing information. After receiving the necessary order information, the vendor sends a copy of the report and a payment receipt via email.
A vehicle registration search is mainly performed to determine the current state of title/registration. This information sheds light on a car's ownership and protects consumers from purchasing stolen vehicles. Similarly, a VHR is used to obtain important information pertaining to a vehicle's past. It contains current and previous title information and other useful details, such as the odometer reading, liens on the vehicle, brand history, total loss and salvage history and vehicle repair and maintenance history.
The NMVTIS is a program of the Department of Justice intended to keep and protect consumers from fraud and unsafe vehicles. The agency connects the public with various services that provide VHRs that are within legal requirements.
