To paint auto wheels, wash them, wipe them with mineral spirits, scuff them with steel wool, wipe them with mineral spirits again, mask the tires, and then paint the wheels. To complete this project, you need rags, a bucket, soap, water, mineral spirits, steel wool, masking tape and automotive wheel paint.
- Wash and wipe the wheels
Wash the wheels with a rag dipped in soapy water, and rinse them with clean water. Wet another rag with mineral spirits, and wipe the wheels until they are free of grease and grime.
- Scuff the wheels
Scuff the wheels with a steel wool pad until the surface is rough, and then wipe them with a clean rag dipped in mineral spirits. Inspect the wheels closely to ensure they are free of dust and debris.
- Mask the tires
Mask the tires with short pieces of masking tape along the border between the rubber and the wheels. Overlap the strips slightly.
- Paint the wheels
Apply three thin coats of automotive wheel spray paint. Each coat must be light and smooth. Let each coat dry according to the paint manufacturer's instructions, and then apply the next coat. When the final coat is dry, remove the masking tape.
