As of 2015, Volkswagen plans to introduce its new retro microbus as a concept vehicle at the Consumer Electronics Show in January 2016 and confirm production for 2017. The company says the 21st century version resembles the boxy original, including a thick rear roof pillar and chopped front end.
The new Volkswagen microbus is an all-electric vehicle with a projected travel range of 250 miles or more on a single charge. The company plans to offer versions that run on diesel and gasoline. Volkswagen manufactured the original microbus for 63 years. The automotive company has been planning an updated version of its popular classic vehicle since 2001 and has chosen Puebla, Mexico, as the production site for the new microbus.
