Do You Need a License to Ride a Moped?

In most states, riders are required to possess a valid driver's license to legally operate a moped. In certain states, like Alabama, riders must also have a motorcycle endorsement, although most states only require a driver's license, assuming the moped's engine is 50cc or less.

Each state has its own laws governing mopeds, and riders must ensure they are familiar with their local laws before driving one. In general, states fall into three categories: those that require no license at all to drive a moped, those that require a basic driver's license, and those that require a driver's license plus motorcycle endorsement.
