As of 2013, replacing a modern car key can cost $200 or more at a dealership, according to Consumer Reports. Modern car keys come equipped with digital transponders to prevent theft. Programming these transponder chips makes modern car keys much more expensive than past car keys.
Depending on the make and model of the car, however, consumers may be able to find a replacement set of keys on the Internet.
Replacing the transponder-equipped car keys of a luxury car can be even more expensive. Consumer Reports quotes a replacement set of Lexus keys at $374, while keys for a BMW can cost as much as $500.
