To get a motorcycle license, first check the licensing requirements for your state. Then, visit your local Secretary of State office or Department of Motor Vehicles location, and take the required tests. Finally, complete a driving skills test or motorcycle safety course, and visit your licensing office to hand in the certification forms and complete the process.
- Check the motorcycle licensing requirements for your state
Visit your state government's website to learn about the requirements for getting a motorcycle license. Learn about written tests, road tests and vision tests.
- Take any required tests
Go to your state's Department of Motor Vehicles office, and take the written skills test, if required. During the same visit, take any required vision or hearing tests.
- Pass the skills test
If you already know how to ride a motorcycle, make an appointment with a state-approved skills tester. Take the test until you obtain a passing score. If you do not know how to ride a motorcycle, or if you need a refresher course, take a motorcycle skills class in your area to complete the skills requirement.
- Secure the license
Bring your skills test results or skills course completion certificate back to the Department of Motor Vehicles office. Pay any required fees, fill out the licensing forms and submit your documents to a representative.
