The Academy of Model Aeronautics mission is to promote model aviation as a recreational activity and a recognized competitive sport. Founded in 1936, the organization has over 140,000 members, which makes it the largest association of its kind in the world, as of 2015.
The organization sanctions over 1,000 competitions in the United States annually. It assists competition holders with procuring ground and airspace as well as liability insurance coverage for events. The academy sanctions over 2,500 model aviation clubs and certifies official records. It is also organizing an increasing number of non-competitive fly-in events for modeling enthusiasts each year. Members have access to additional insurance coverage if they are flying outside of regular club fields.
The Academy of Model Aeronautics publishes several magazines, maintains Internet information sources, and provides educational resources for members and subscribers. Publications include Model Aviation, Sport Aviator, Park Pilot and various newsletters. The organization has event calendars, membership applications, competitive rules and information on how to get involved in the model aviation hobby, clubs and competitions on its website.
Next to the academy's headquarters in Muncie, Indiana, the group maintains the National Model Aviation Museum, which has over 9,000 artifacts in its collection. Exhibits are available for individual and group tours on the history and heritage of model aviation.
