Mazda models affected by the 2013 to 2014 Takata airbag recall included Mazda6 released between 2003 and 2007, MazdaSpeed6 released between 2006 and 2007, Mazda RX-8 released between 2004 and 2008, MPV released between 2004 and 2005 and the B-Series Truck released in 2004. A total number of 64,872 vehicles were involved in the callback, as reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in October, 2014.
The Mazda vehicles that were recalled were believed to have been installed with faulty airbag inflators which malfunctioned when constantly exposed to high temperatures and humidity. Accidents involving these airbags were documented in particularly humid areas, such as Florida and Puerto Rico. NHTSA advises Mazda owners to check their vehicle identification number (VIN), to find out if their car has been added to the list of potentially affected vehicles.
