As of January 2015, Firestone tires are manufactured by Bridgestone Americas. The company was known as Bridgestone/Firestone following the acquisition of the Firestone Tire & Rubber Company by the Bridgestone Corporation in 1988.
Harvey Firestone founded the company bearing his name in Akron, Ohio, in 1900. Thirty-one years later, Shojiro Ishibashi began the Bridgestone Tire Company Ltd. in Japan. When Bridgestone purchased Firestone in 1988 for $2.6 billion, the deal created the world's largest tire and rubber company.
Bridgestone/Firestone became Bridgestone's largest subsidiary, and in 1992 it moved its headquarters from Akron to Nashville, Tennessee. Known as Bridgestone Americas as of January 2015, the subsidiary consists of companies that have 52 production facilities and over 50,000 workers in the Americas.
