To make your own car wash soap, fill a bucket with a mixture of warm water, dish detergent, borax and powdered laundry detergent. This procedure takes roughly 5 minutes and requires a large bucket, latex gloves, a paper cone mask, a wooden paint stick, measuring spoons, a measuring cup, water, liquid dish detergent, borax and powdered laundry detergent.
- Pour warm water into the bucket
Fill a clean bucket halfway with warm water.
- Take safety precautions
Bring the bucket and all of the other ingredients outside. Don a pair of latex gloves and a paper cone mask.
- Add the borax and powdered laundry detergent
Add 12 tablespoons powdered laundry detergent, 1 cup liquid dishwashing soap and 1/2 cup borax to the bucket. Do not lean over the bucket, and handle the ingredients gently to prevent splashing. For the best results, use alkali-free dish soap and petroleum-based powdered laundry detergent. These ingredients protect your vehicle's finish and do not contain toxic chlorine.
- Stir the shampoo
Stir the mixture with a wooden paint stick.
- Add more water
Add enough hot water to fill the bucket. Stir the shampoo again, and use it immediately. If you have leftover shampoo, pour it into the ground or down a storm drain, and then rinse the area with water.
