The compressor is the most important component of the air conditioning system. This component pressurizes the refrigerant, in order to produce cool air. The compressor uses an electrical clutch to turn the component on and off, which allows the user to control the amount of cool air.

The condenser acts as a small radiator, and is generally mounted near the front of the vehicle next to the standard radiator. Once compressed, hot air travels through the condenser and begins to get cooler.

The evaporator serves as another miniature radiator, but this component performs a task opposite of the condenser. After cool liquid has passed through the condenser's tubes, air is pushed through and starts to get extremely cold. This is the cool air that exits the ventilation.

The thermal expansion valve is used to control the amount of refrigerant that enters the evaporator. This valve on the air conditioning system is required to produce and reduce the amount of cool air exiting the ventilation. Although there are multiple types of valves, each valve performs the same task.
