Look up a motor carrier number by entering the shipping company's name into the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration's Safety and Fitness Electronic Records system. In addition to providing motor carrier numbers, the SAFER system provides a large amount of useful safety information about shipping companies.
From the FMCSA's SAFER system website, navigate to the Company Snapshot page. Obtain a shipping company's snapshot by entering the company's name, motor carrier number or United States Department of Transportation identification number. The SAFER database has information for both current and defunct motor carriers in the United States.
The SAFER database provides the motor carrier number or, where applicable, the MX or freight forwarder number. The database also lists the shipping company's full legal name, business trade name, corporate address, mailing address and operating status. The company snapshot listing also shows the number of power units, which are the trucks, buses, limousines and other heavy vehicles the company operates.
The lower part of the SAFER company snapshot shows the company's safety history. This data includes any crashes involving the company's vehicles. Crash information includes the type of vehicle involved in a crash, what cargo the vehicle was carrying and the severity of injuries suffered by anyone in the crash.
