Yachts range in length from 39 feet up to hundreds of feet. A luxury sailing vessel shorter than 39 feet is typically referred to as a cabin cruiser. A "super yacht" is usually more than 79 feet long, and a "mega yacht" is more than 164 feet long.
The term "yacht" can refer to either a sailboat or a power boat. They are differentiated from other ships by their purpose of leisure rather than by the structure of the boat. The word yacht comes from the Dutch word "Jacht," which means "hunt." Originally, yachts referred to fast ships used by the Dutch navy and later came to be known for transporting important people.
