An average 64-passenger school bus is 35 feet long. In 1995, the National Standards for School Transportation deemed that no school bus could be more than 40 feet long. This regulation is still in effect as of 2014.
As of 2013, there were approximately 468,000 school buses in operation in the United States. Federal regulations require that all buses designated for school transportation must be painted a color called "National School Bus Glossy Yellow." This color is highly visible at dawn and dusk and provides sharp contrast for black lettering. These buses transported nearly 29 million students to school during the 2013 school year.
