Water pumps on cars can be externally or internally located. The pump is positioned toward the front or side of the car and at the back of the fan belt. Several engine components must be removed to access the water pump.
Externally located water pumps in cars are easily visible, but those located internally are positioned within the engine.
In rear-wheel drive vehicles that have engines mounted longitudinally, the alternator, drive belts, pulley of the engine, air shroud, radiator, fan and clutch must be taken out to access the water pump. In front-wheel drive vehicles, the water pump is more difficult to access because the engine is positioned sideways. This makes it necessary to remove several more components of the engine before the water pump can be located.
