The largest aircraft carrier in the world is the United States carrier, the Nimitz Class. Each carrier is designed to require only one mid-life overhaul.
With a full load displacement of 97,000 tons, the Nimitz Class is ahead of the next largest aircraft carrier by a displacement of about 30,000 tons. Each ship towers at least 20 stories over water and has an occupancy of about 5,000 passengers. Nimitz Class is powered by two nuclear reactors that propel it to a maximum speed of more than 30 knots. Mounted aboard the vessel to defend against potential threats are Sea Sparrow and Rolling Airframe missiles in addition to a Phalanx close-in weapons system.
