In 1997, Kia Motors filed for bankruptcy, which resulted in Hyundai taking control of 51 percent of the company. Hyundai is still considered the parent company of Kia Motors. This partnership has resulted in many Kia models using engines designed by Hyundai or by GEMA. GEMA engines are generally placed in compact 1.8-, 2.0- or 2.4-liter displacement vehicles.

However, Kia is responsible for making their respective performance engines. One prime example is the GDI Turbo system found on their race spec Optima.
