A tire valve stem is installed by inserting the threaded side of the valve stem through the rim valve stem hole. Then, pull it through by using a specially made valve stem insertion tool or by using standard pliers. Complete the installation by reinstalling the tire and reinflating.
- Preparing the rim
If the rim is in use on a vehicle, remove the tire from the vehicle and deflate the tire. Completely remove the tire from the rim, or break the bead of the tire by using a crowbar. Insert the crowbar between the tire and the rim. Hit the end of the crowbar repeatedly with a sledgehammer until a pop is heard. Pry the tire loose from the rim. Remove the old valve stem.
- Insert the valve stem
Insert the threaded side of the valve stem through the rim hole. If a valve stem insertion tool is available, thread the end of the tool onto the valve stem. Place the tool arm against the edge of the rim and use it as a lever by pushing down on the tool's handle. The valve stem will sit in place. If the tool is not available, push the valve stem through the rim hole and grip with pliers. Pull the valve stem through the rim hole until it is seated.
- Complete installation
Reinstall the tire on the rim and then back on the vehicle. Inflate the tire to the appropriate air pressure.
