A wheel hub supports the lugs of the car and houses the wheel bearing. It keeps the wheel spinning freely while keeping it attached to the vehicle.
Wheel hub bearings can become worn out and should be checked on a regular basis. Noise is an indicator of damage. Snapping, clicking or popping when making sharp turns can be a sign of a worn or damaged outer CV-joint. Grinding while in motion means roller or raceway damage. To check a wheel hub, perform a hand rotation check on the wheel. Remove the wheel cover and lug nuts. Also remove the caliper mounting bracket and brake rotor. A wobbly hub unit can signify bearing damage.
