These vehicles and others like them are the safest used cars on the road for teenage drivers, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. They come in all sizes and range between $10,000 and $20,000.
Topping the list of safest small SUVs is the Honda CR-V in model year 2012 and later, note experts at the IIHS. The Kia Sportage in model year 2011 and older and the Hyundai Tucson in model year 2010 and later take second and third, respectively. These SUVs and others on the IIHS's list earn 4 to 5 stars or a "good" rating on government crash tests. They also have electronic stability control, which helps mitigate collisions and crashes.
For midsize SUVs, the Volvo XC60 in model year 2010 and later, the 2011-2012 Saab 9-4X and the 2008 and older Toyota Highlander rank one to three, respectively.
