According to Equipment World, the Cat 420 F backhoe was a top seller during the first quarter of 2014. Contractors also gave positive reviews to Case backhoes, citing better maneuverability compared to other brands.
In its review of the Case 580 N Super backhoe, Equipment World gives the machine an overall score of 8.6 out of a possible 10 points. Contractors found that the machine is more nimble and easier to maneuver than other popular brands. The reviewers also cited comfortable controls, fuel capacity, and lights which help to extend productivity to get construction jobs done faster.
Cat F series backhoes are also popular. ForConstructionPros.com notes the improvements to the Cat F series backhoes, including a refined hydraulic system, electronic controls and increased ease of maintenance in addition to reduced emissions. Other popular brands include JCB, Komatsu and Terramite.
Backhoes with more than 70 horsepower are high-end, while backhoes with less than 70 horsepower are low-spec. Because environmental regulations for high-end backhoes are stricter, manufacturers must provide better emissions controls which increase the price of the machine. A low-spec backhoe with less than 70 horsepower can offer the consumer more features and capacity for the money. Case and Cat both offer low-spec backhoes that are highly rated.
