As of December 2010, Hero MotoCorp, Ltd. split from Honda by phasing out of the business. They then bought out Honda's 26-percent stake in Hero Honda.
Hero MotoCorp, Ltd. began as Hero Honda, a joint venture between Hero Cycles, an Indian motorcycle manufacturer, and Honda, the Japanese car manufacturing company, in 1984. Twenty-six years later, they announced an end to the joint venture and Hero MotoCorp was born. In the years since the end of the venture, Hero MotoCorp has been merged with the investment arm of its parent company and has expanded its business efforts in India, selling 6.1 million units in 2013 alone.
