The Scion tC, Honda Accord, Chevrolet Malibu and Volkswagen GTI are among the top-rated used cars on the market as of June 2015, according to U.S. News & World Report. All of these cars rank highly in their respective market segments for quality and cost of ownership.
The used car rankings reported by U.S. News & World Report come from a combination of professional reviews, repair data and cost of ownership estimates. The 2009 Honda Accord is rated the top mid-size used car under $15,000 and the 2012 version is second only to the Malibu among used cars $15,000 or more. The Accord ranks highly largely on the strength of its reliability and safety features, though the Malibu's reviews and performance put it ahead of the Accord in the total rankings for the more expensive mid-size category.
The Volkswagen GTI and Scion tC are likely to appeal to used car buyers who prefer a smaller car or who have a smaller budget. The 2009 tC is a Toyota-made coupe rated as the best buy in used small cars under $10,000, while the 2011 GTI is a performance version of the venerable Golf hatchback series and the best-rated hatchback selling for $15,000 or more on the used market. Buyers who like the GTI but need slightly more size or refinement may be interested in the 2009 Audi A3, a more luxurious mechanical twin of the GTI that is the top-rated upscale small used car under $20,000.
