Volkswagen introduced the Karmann-Ghia coupe in the United States in 1956. The West German automaker brought the sporty convertible version, which was about $400 more expensive than the coupe, to the United States in 1958. Under the hood, the Karmann-Ghia is a Volkswagen Beetle, including the Beetle's classic air-cooled, rear-mounted engine. Volkswagen sold close to 388,000 Karmann-Ghias through 1974, when it ceased vehicle production to use the factory space for building the Scirocco.
