A chart explaining the different colors of antifreeze and the year and models in which they are used is available on Carid.com. The Whitfield Oil Company also has a similar chart produced by Zerex on its website.
Green was a common color of antifreeze until recently. Green antifreeze was known to poison pets and was considered bad for the environment. There was a movement to replace these with safer liquids. Car owners should be careful only to use antifreeze that is specifically made for their vehicle for optimum performance. Mixing different types of antifreeze is not recommended and could result in inefficiency and possible cooling system damage.
