Personalized plates in Georgia, called prestige plates by the state Department of Motor Vehicles, are requested through Form MV-9B, titled the "Georgia Department of Revenue - Motor Vehicle Division Personal Special Prestige License Plate Application." The completed form must be submitted to the local county tag office.
Form MV-9B includes spaces for up to three design choices, in case the first and second choice have already been taken, or are deemed profane or vulgar. The offered custom plate design is the first available of the three options. Using the information filled out on the form, including vehicle make and model, VIN number, name, address and driver's license number, access the Georgia Department of Motor Vehicles website to determine where the local tag office is located. Submit the completed form with a full payment to start the process of obtaining a custom plate. Partial payments are not accepted.
Prestige plates in Georgia carry additional costs, both up-front and on an annual basis. Examples of fees include a one-time manufacturing fee, an annual special tag fee of and a shipping charge, if necessary. Additionally, should the license plate design of Georgia ever change, another manufacturing fee is required. Historically, Georgia changes its license plate about every four years, which can result in frequent additional fees.
