As of January 2015, General tires are made by Continental Tire North America Inc., which used to be called Continental General Tire Inc. Before that, the company was called General Tire Inc.
The General Tire and Rubber Company was founded in 1915 in Akron, Ohio. In 1984, shareholders of the company agreed to name changes and the establishment of GenCorp Inc. as the parent holding company to oversee four major business groups. One subsidiary was General Tire Inc., which was set up to handle worldwide tire manufacturing.
In April 1987, Continental AG, a West German company, bought General Tire from GenCorp. General Tire continued under that name until 1994, at which time it became Continental General Tire Inc. The company name was changed to Continental Tire North America Inc. in 2000.
