The main difference between gearbox oil and regular engine oil is that gearbox oil facilitates the smooth functioning of gears instead of lubricating different parts of a car’s engine as regular oil does. Additionally, gearbox oil prevents gearbox noise when shifting gears, while engine oil helps clean the engine.
The additives or chemical compounds introduced into gearbox oil and regular engine oil also vary depending on their purpose. For example, in gearbox oil, extreme pressure and anti-wear agents are the main additives because gears work under high temperatures and extreme pressure when the vehicle is in motion. In regular engine oil, additives help eliminate harmful products created in the engine during the combustion process.
In terms of viscosity, the two oils are generally thick, but gearbox oil appears thicker and flows slower than regular engine oil. Gearbox oil has a higher viscosity because it needs to flow properly and lubricate every part of the gear.
Gearbox oil is further divided into different categories, such as extreme pressure gearbox oil, synthetic gearbox oil, compounded gearbox oil, and rust and oxidation preventive oil. There are three categories of engine oil, which include synthetic, conventional and synthetic blend engine oil. Synthetic engine oil costs more due to its high viscosity, while conventional oil is the most affordable of all engine oils.
