Garmin map updates are not free. The company offers a one-time purchase or a lifetime map upgrade purchase for users of its compatible GPS devices.
In order to update the maps on a compatible Garmin device, a software application named Garmin Express must be installed on the user's computer. Once the software is installed, the user must connect the device to the computer and navigate through the software's prompts. As of January 2015, lifetime North American map updates for Garmin devices cost $89.99, while one-time updates can be purchased for $49.99 per update. Neither update plan is compatible with StreetPilot devices.
