The type of engine determines the location of the fuel filter. In a Taurus with a V-6 engine, the filter is underneath the car, in front of the passenger side rear wheel. In a Taurus with a V-4 engine, the filter is on the passenger side of the engine compartment.
Fuel filters remove particles and pollutants that are detrimental to engine performance. They are vital to the healthy function and longevity of a car. Unfiltered fuel contains a variety of contamination, which can lead to failure of the fuel pump and injectors. Just like oil and coolant, fuel filters need to be serviced at regular intervals.
