The 2014 Chevrolet SS was a four-door performance sedan powered by a 6.2-liter V8 engine that produced 415 horsepower and 415 foot-pound of torque. Though similar to the 2014 Impala in size and design, the SS is actually based on an Australian sedan model rather than the Impala.
The 2014 Chevrolet SS is considered a distinct model of vehicle, rather than a Super Sport version of the Impala, since they are mechanically dissimilar. The 2014 SS was based on a rear-wheel drive design from the Australian Holden subsidiary of General Motors, while the Impala was a front-wheel drive vehicle using the Epsilon II platform. This lead to significant differences in the driving character and performance of the two cars. However, the similarities in size and styling between these cars may lead some observers to incorrectly assume that the SS is a variant of the Impala, especially since the SS trim level was available for some previous generations of the Impala.
In addition to its powerful engine, the 2014 SS came standard with leather-trimmed upholstery and an unusual Heads-Up display system that displayed speed and performance information on the windshield for the driver. A locking rear differential and a six-speed automatic transmission were also standard. These features helped the SS achieve performance similar to that of the BMW M5 and other high-end sports sedans, including accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in only 4.5 seconds.
