Equipment used with a wrecker include J-hooks, D-ring shackles, booms, tow chains and axle straps. The hook and chains, also known as a sling, are looped around the vehicle axle or frame. A boom winch is used to draw the vehicle aloft and recover vehicles over an embankment.
Slings, which are no longer popular, are used to tow 2-WD vehicles that have one or two missing wheels. D-ring shackles attach recovery straps and tow straps to vehicles. An integrated lift or a self-loader have the boom and wheel-lift combined into one unit, making quick pick-ups easier. A flatbed or a rollback is inclined to ground level so that the towed vehicle can be moved to it.
