The 2015 Mercedes-Benz S-Class comes with the buyer's choice of five available engines: a 4.7-liter V-8, a 6.0-liter V-12, a 5.5-liter AMG V-8, a 6.0-liter AMG V-12, and a gas-electric-hybrid 3.0-liter V-6. Each available engine choice corresponds to a trim level within the S-Class lineup.
For 2015, Mercedes-Benz sells its S-Class full-size luxury sedan and coupe lineup in five trim levels. The entry-level S550 gets a twin-turbocharged direct-injection V-8 making 449 horsepower. Stepping up to the luxury-line S600 brings a 6.0-liter direct-injection twin-turbo V-12 with 523 horsepower.
Two AMG models feature different hand-built engines with tuning by the German luxury brand's in-house AMG performance division. The S63 AMG 4MATIC pairs a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-12 making 577 horsepower with 4MATIC all-wheel-drive, while the rear-wheel-drive S65 AMG gets a mammoth 6.0-liter twin-turbo V-12 with 621 horsepower.
Finally, the gas-electric S550 Plug-In Hybrid pairs a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 with an electric motor integrated into its transmission for a combined 436 peak horsepower and can travel for about 20 miles on electric power alone.
