What Is a Driver's Permit?

A driver's permit is a permit required for first time drivers to be able to drive in most states. A driver's permit often requires applicants to pass a vision and knowledge exam and have a parent or guardian sign the application if the applicant is under 18 years of age.

Applicants are normally required to provide documentation proving identity, residential address and citizenship in order to receive a driver's permit. A minor with a permit is often required to have a licensed driver over 18 or 21 years of age with them when operating a motor vehicle. Applicants must be at least 15 or 16 years old to apply for a permit in most states.
