Donating a car to help kids can be arranged through Kars4Kids.org and the Make a Wish Foundation's Wheels for Wishes program. Kars4Kids.org is a car donation program that requires visitors to provide the make, model and year of the car, mileage, title and working condition.
Site visitors must also provide an address for pick-up. In states such as New York, pick-up may be arranged in as little as 24 hours. The IRS allows a person to claim a tax deduction for the sale price of the car and the donor receives a tax-deductible receipt. If a car is valued at less than $500, a donor can claim the fair market value up to $500. Kars4Kids.org provides a donor’s guide that can be downloaded and tips on tax filing and how to claim the deduction.
The Make a Wish foundation also accepts donated cars to help kids who face life-threatening medical conditions. Proceeds from the sale of the vehicle go to Wheels for Wishes. A donor fills out a form, and arranges for vehicle pick-up. The donor receives a 100 percent tax-deductible receipt when the vehicle is sold. Donors also benefit by eliminating the insurance cost for a vehicle that is no longer used.
