The different types of Skeeter boats include bass boats, bay boats and deep-V boats. Each type of boat has its own series line. For instance, Skeeter's bass boats include the FX Series, ZX Series, TZX Series and SL Series, as of 2015.
Skeeter Performance Fishing Boats designs and manufactures various types of fishing boats. In 1948, Holmes Thurman built the first Skeeter bass boat in Marshall, Texas. It measured about 13 feet long and was made of molded marine plywood. The company got its name from the boat's design, which featured a long, needle-shaped nose that resembled a mosquito. Skeeter began manufacturing boats with fiber glass in the 1950s, which made it possible to produce more sizes, styles and a larger number of boats.
The Coleman Company, known for its camping equipment, purchased Skeeter in 1983, and Skeeter then launched the new Fish ‘n’ Ski series as well as the SX model. In the 1990s, Skeeter launched the Baypro series, its first line of saltwater boats.
The Yamaha Boat Company acquired Skeeter in 1996, giving the company more technology and resources to bring more advanced designs to its boats. In 2013, Skeeter won the Excellence in Customer Satisfaction for Fiberglass Outdoor Boats award for maintaining a customer satisfaction rating of 90 percent or higher.
