The Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution is the car most comparable to the Subaru WRX STI. The pair is still engrossed in a rivalry dating back to 1992. The Volkswagen Golf R is another car closely resembling the STI in terms of design, performance and price.
The Subaru WRX STI is an all-wheel-drive, turbocharged, front-engine, five-passenger, four-door sedan that rose out of the World Rally Championship, as is the Mitsubishi Evolution. The rally models that eventually gave their shapes, names and specifications to these sport compacts began to compete in 1992. The rivalry between the two spilled into the consumer market when road-worthy models were released several years later. Mitsubishi and Subaru brought the Evolution and STI to the U.S. market in 2003 and 2004 respectively. Mitsubishi is ending production of its Evolution line after the 2015 models, but the STI remains on the market.
