By removing both the oil filler cap and the dipstick, the old oil drains from the engine more efficiently. Use an old pan to collect the oil after loosening the drain bolt with a 13 millimeter socket wrench. Lay down newspaper to catch any further oil splashes beneath the truck. After the oil has sufficiently drained from the engine, move the oil pan to beneath the oil filter, which should be located on the driver's side. Twist off the oil filter, and leave the receptacle to drain for some time.

Before attaching the new oil filter, lubricate the o-ring on the new oil filter with some SAE 5W-20 oil. Screw on the new oil filter and the drain bolt about a quarter turn past hand tight. A recommended oil filter for the Ram 1500 is Mobil 1 M1-210. Add 5 to 5.5 liters of the SAE 5W-20 oil to the engine using a funnel. Screw the cap back on the oil filler, and let the engine run for a few minutes. Recheck the dip stick to make sure the oil is still at a safe level.
