A catalytic converter, or CC, on a car works to take the harmful compounds that a vehicle puts out and it converts them into harmless compounds. It works to convert carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen oxides.
Carbon monoxide comes from gasoline combustion and any organism that breathes air can experience carbon monoxide poisoning. Hydrocarbons result from unburned gasoline and it causes the production of smog in the environment. Nitrogen oxides result from engine heat forces oxygen and the nitrogen in the air to combine. Nitrogen oxides cause the production of smog in the environment and it is also responsible for the formation of acid rain.
