A carbon monoxide detector for a car can detect the presence of potentially dangerous fumes leaking into the interior of the vehicle. Carbon monoxide detectors are generally not marketed for vehicles specifically but can be used in them because they are small and battery-powered.
Carbon monoxide is generated as a by-product of the burning of gasoline and can potentially leak into the interior of vehicles if they are damaged or improperly serviced. Any standard carbon dioxide detector with a battery can be used. Place the carbon monoxide detector in the vehicle, close the windows and vents, start the vehicle and immediately exit. After 10 minutes, shut down the vehicle, and check the detector's readings to determine if there is a carbon monoxide leak in the car.
