A car shammy is a soft cloth commonly used to dry an automobile after washing. It is often made out of animal skin but can also be constructed from soft cotton to simulate a hide. A car shammy is also referred to as a chamois.
A car shammy is often considered an important part of properly caring for a car's paint job. Auto detailing professionals often recommend a car shammy above other drying cloths because it is less likely to scratch paint than cloths made of polyester and microfibers. They are absorbent and help prevent mineral deposits from forming water spots on a car's paint.
