As of 2015, used pipe can be purchased online through websites such as DKMUsedPipe.com and NetworkIntl.com, an auction-style liquidator. Used pipe is also available through companies such as Crestwood Tubulars, which displays inventory online but requires the customer to call or fax for prices and purchasing.
Much of the used steel pipe available on the market is recovered from the oil industry. Pipe resold after having been utilized by the oil industry may have experienced saltwater or acid corrosion and very thin spots caused by rod wear. Used pipe is tested and categorized by body wall loss. White band contains a maximum of 12 percent loss; yellow band contains a maximum of 15 percent; blue band is between 16 and 30 percent; and red band is up to 30 percent body wall damage.
