Safercar.gov provides a comprehensive treadwear rating chart for most of the tires used in the United States. The rating chart is based on the Uniform Tire Quality Grading System developed by the U.S. Department of Transportation. Tires with high treadwear ratings last longer.
Treadwear is presented as grades instead of miles. This is because the grading test is very short, and the mileage covered by each tire is influenced by factors such as the driving surface, weather and the style of driving. The UTQG grade of each tire is molded on the sidewall and is also indicated on a paper label attached to each new tire. SafeCar.gov also provides information on traction performance and temperature resistance.
