To determine the status of a USDOT number by phone, call the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration customer service. The number to call is located under the FMCSA Information Line tab on the FMCSA website or under FAQs. The FMCSA issues a USDOT number to companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting cargo or passengers across states, or hazardous materials within state. The number is unique to each company, and it monitors safety information of a company by storing information on its audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations and inspections.
There are 33 states that also require the registrants of commercial motor vehicles to acquire a USDOT number. These include Maine, Pennsylvania, Texas and New York, as of 2015.
The FMCSA, established in 2000, is part of the Department of Transportation. The primary tasks of the FMCSA is to prevent vehicle-related fatalities and injuries caused by commercial motor vehicles, enforce safety regulations, and improve safety information systems and commercial motor vehicle technologies. It is also responsible for testing and licensing commercial motor vehicle drivers.
