Authentic chassis-code R34 Nissan Skyline GT-Rs are not sold in the United States due to Federal laws prohibiting them from being imported into the country. In particular, the laws bar the importation of any car model never sold in the U.S., if the vehicle is less than 25 years old. As Nissan built the R34 from 1998 to 2002, it does not meet the requirements for importation.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration states that vehicles not sold in the U.S. cannot be imported because they may not comply with American vehicle safety mandates and standards. This rule even applies to foreign road-going production vehicles only intended to be driven in the U.S. on racetracks or off public roads. The R34 Skyline GT-R cars sold to the general public do not meet the limited exceptions that are occasionally given.
Cars more than 25 years old can be imported starting from the actual date of production, rather than their model year. That means the earliest chassis-code R32 Skyline GT-R, which entered production in 1990, can now be legally imported, sold, purchased and driven.
