In the United States, an applicant for a driving permit must be within a certain age range and must pass a test or complete a driving class to obtain the permit. The minimum age varies from state to state, but is usually between 14 and 18 years old.
Driver's or learner's permits universally apply to drivers who are under the age of 18 and who live in the United States. First-time drivers who are already adults when they seek to learn may or may not be required to obtain a driving permit. Some states waive this requirement, and others allow adult drivers to obtain a license on the same day that they obtain a permit.
Note that in all cases, applicants must have proper identity documentation before they can apply for a permit or license from their state DMV.
