As of 2015, Subaru does not offer its Outback model, or any of its other models, with a diesel-engine option in the United States. Diesel models are available in the United Kingdom and Australia.
Despite pressure from consumers, Subaru continues to offer only gasoline-powered vehicles at its United States dealerships. One speculation is that the Subaru diesel engine, known as a "boxer diesel," is too powerful to be compatible with the Subaru transmissions in United States vehicles. As of 2015, all Subaru diesel engines are paired with a six-speed manual transmission. A Facebook page called "Bring Subaru Diesel to the U.S.!" attracts potential buyers who want to see Subaru bring its diesel engine stateside.
