At NHTSA.gov, hover the mouse over the Vehicle Safety tab near the top of the main page, and the click Recalls and Defects link on the drop-down menu. Click the yellow Search for Recalls by VIN button located about midway down the page, type the vehicle identification number in the Enter VIN Here box, type the Captcha code as it's displayed, and then click the Submit button to display open recalls on the vehicle. Click the Recalls FAQ link on the left side of the page to display answers to frequently asked questions about recalls, such as "How Will I Know If There's a Recall?" "Where Do I Find My VIN?" and "What Do I Do If My Car Is Recalled?"

At SaferCar.gov, click the Vehicle Owners tab near the top of the main page. In the blue Select Type search box, select the model year and make and model, and then click Go to display recalls for the vehicle. Click the Investigations tab for information about investigations into safety concerns about the vehicle, click the Complaints tab to display complaints filed against the vehicle, and click the Service Bulletins tab to display a list of applicable service bulletins.
