As of 2014, the most famous and trusted moped brand is the Vespa; its name is practically synonymous with scooters. Honda, Suzuki and Yamaha are reliable and well-known brands, and Taiwanese brands such as Kymco, SYM, PGO and Taiwan Golden Bee are working hard to establish a North American customer base.
As of 2014, North America has over a hundred moped brands available for purchase ranging in quality, price and maintenance. Some brands offer more customization options than others. Different brands utilize different engines, and certain mopeds are infamous for their difficulty to maintain in good working order.
If cost is an important option, the Chinese market offers discount scooter brands of varying quality. Discount brands like Schwinn, Q-Link, Flyscooters, Lance and others are built in China and sold by local North American dealers. Some Chinese brands buy engines and frames from third-party factories, assemble them and sell them until bad reviews force them to change the branding. These machines can be well-built, but quality is not guaranteed. As of 2014, however, the Znen brand and a few others are working to establish themselves as a legitimate brand and offer higher quality models. Chinese brands can be difficult to resell at a later date.
